On the surface, known to us, what we think is driving us

Deep within, unknown to us, what is also driving us

Seeks satisfaction and fulfillment

Seeks resolution and completion

Wants to stay and enjoy

Wants to let go and move on

Demands comfort

Accepts challenges

As we rally our writing powers to compose a poem, it is helpful to keep the above chart in mind, to presume there is an unconscious motivation afoot somewhere, and to realize that our poetry may give us a clue to it. Throughout this book we have noticed that we are most successful in writing a poem when we combine mindfulness, openness, and imagination. Usually our mindfulness shows us what is happening consciously and our openness and imagination steer us into the deeper waters of the unconscious. This is yet another reason that the combination of mindfulness and imagination that happens in poetry can make for a degree of healing and resolution that does not happen ordinarily.

Now we can look at specific difficult stresses and explore how writing poetry can lead to more confidence in handling them as well as healing any wounds they may have caused us.
